Gaining the Upper Saddle of the Grand at dawn, a friend and I saw deep, dark clouds all around, giving us some doubts as to the success of our summit bid. But I had no doubt as to the success of our trip in artistic terms, as the clouds made the colors of dawn even more dramatic at this already dramatic viewpoint. As it was we did make the summit. The clouds that played around the peaks all day did not turn to storm, but veiled the peaks in a mystery and beauty, as though I was seeing them all again with fresh vision.
